What’s the difference between a Knotless Hay Net and a Knotted Hay Net?
Our knotless hay nets are made from a soft, cross-woven mesh with no hard knots. They’re gentler on your horse’s lips and gums, lightweight, and easy to fill.
Knotted hay nets use traditional rope with visible knots, making them extremely durable and ideal for rough feeders or outdoor use.
Both styles are strong and long-lasting, but knotless nets are the softer, premium option.
What does mesh size mean, and what sizes are available?
Mesh size refers to the size of the openings in the hay net. Smaller mesh slows down eating more than larger mesh. At Gutzbusta, we offer:
- ¾” (20mm) – Extreme Slow Feed, for horses very experienced with nets.
- 1” (25mm) – New balanced option, great for controlled slow feeding.
- 1¼” (30mm) – Decelerator, good for enthusiastic eaters.
- 1¾” (40mm) – Moderate, an excellent starting point for most horses.
- 2½” (60mm) – Free & Easy, mainly for reducing waste without slowing intake too much.
Where should I start if I’m unsure which Hay Net I need?
If you’re new to slow feeding, the 1¾” Moderate mesh is usually the best place to start. It slows down eating without being too frustrating for your horse.
For experienced horses or those with metabolic issues (like laminitis or Cushing’s), a smaller mesh (¾” or 1”) may be more suitable.
For paddock use or waste reduction, larger sizes (2½”) work well.
